AMPM24-7 Meditational Dance instruction by AnnMarie
Meditational (sometimes know as "trance") Dance is a form of active meditation through authentic movement, a journey to the inner landscape of the self. We do this to encourage the essential self to come forward and flow in rhythms it finds appropriate and natural to itself.
To me, Dance is linked to creation as the movement of the Soul… blending sound, light and color in rhythmic patterns of geometry that ignite our inner eye and allow us to flow smoothly into areas of consciousness where we may choose to feel a oneness with all-that-is.
Meditational Dance can be a doorway for releasing, healing and reconnecting with Divine Source. In thousands of cultures dating back tens of thousands of years… Dance has been used as a means to experience, in the body, feelings of divinity, beauty, unity, wellness and flow. One of the oldest forms of self-expression on the planet, Dance, can assist you in expanding your awareness, presence and passion for life. Meditative Dance can do this no matter what your level of fitness or mobility, allowing your self to start where you are and move from that point to an expanded state of wellness.
All energy consists of vibration and is the stuff that we are made of. Every where we “stand” we each create and emit our own unique “vibrational” field. As our feelings stem from the thoughts we think, both are energy and as such can “move”. To dance with intention is a wonderful way to feel the patterns of vibration that your body is presently emiting and move the energy to a place that may feel more joyous, energized and liquid.
My Guidelines
Because of the personal nature of this dance and these movements, I will encourage you to wear sunglasses or a light blindfold. We tend to spend much of our time concerned about how we look to others and/or comparing ourselves to “others”. During our Dance I ask that we take this added step to alleviate this “outward” focus.
We will practice a breathing technique, that I will teach you. Which involves taking quick deep breaths then exhaling very slowly thru your teeth. When practiced over time, you will find a natural and easy rhythm of your own. You may notice a slight feeling of light headedness, I suggest you vary the holding pattern of your breath until you are comfortable with movement while doing this breathwork.
I also often like to combine Dance with a form of meditative vocalization called Overtoning. If vocalization interestes you or your group I can demonstrate and instruct the technique. I use breath and overtoning while dancing and find that the combination stills mind chatter and provides me with a swift pathway to the inner landscape.
This type of Dance can be performed with much movement and cover a large area, yet I have found it is just as easy to create a safe space with carpets or an “imaginary” area around our bodies and find significant freedom within that self-defined area. If you have a space that you already use to workout or do yoga that would work well and during warm weather months we can move outdoors to practice.
What you can expect to receive from this experience is: A heightened sense of being connected with your deepest self, a calm knowing that something far vaster than your day-to-day life is going on and you are a part of it. A reverence and respect for the body you have created thus far in this life, no matter what it’s shape or age and a clear understanding that you can and do possess the ability to move with, thru and out the other side of any physical “feeling” you may be experiencing, as well as be the conscious creator of the feelings you allow to move through your body.
Meditational Dance is done with intention. You will decide what you want to arrive at clarity about. If you would like to experience a co-journaling session with me in order to go deeper into what those areas may be, I will be happy to assist with that. We can work this any way that feels comfortable for you. As someone who has experienced tremendous insight from movement and sound as prayer and meditation, I throughly enjoy sharing this with others.
